"This proposal takes a prosaic structure – a modern industrial shed – and turns it into something unexpected.
Our client needed a limited lifespan solution for a co-living, co-working and co-catering campus.
Inspired by Gordon Matta-Clark and Lina Bo Bardi, we took the opportunity to play fast and loose with the soon-to-be-demolished structure. Breaking out and peeling away the existing building fabric allowed a natural invasion of the interior as a ‘river’ and ‘rainforest’.
Other features were left intact as remnants and signs of previous use. New modular units provide mixed-use accommodation which can be transported elsewhere at the end of the project’s lifespan.
Similar sites are plentiful and offer untapped potential – we think this should be a more common approach to activating inner city sites."
